The evictions in Assam have caused massive upheaval, leaving thousands of families suddenly without homes or support. While the BJP government frames these actions as measures against illegal encroachment, many of those affected insist they have long-standing ties to the land and hold documents to prove it. Amid a climate of Islamophobia, fueled by the state’s chief minister, who has vowed to remove Bangladeshi migrants, Bengali-speaking Muslims are bearing the brunt of the crackdown.
